1918 Spanish Flu: How Chiropractors Saved Lives

Between 1917 and 1918 the Spanish flu  pandemic swept across the globe. Upwards of 500,000 Americans died during this epidemic and the estimates range from 20 million to 40 million deaths worldwide. Where medicine fell short, chiropractors delivered specific spinal adjustments and many lives were saved.

In Davenport , Iowa where the Palmer School of Chiropractic was located 50 medical doctors saw 4,953 patients with 274 of them succumbing to the flu. In the same location 150 chiropractors, Palmer faculty and students saw 1,635 with only 1 patient dying! This same trend occurred across the United States with MDs sending patients who were on their death beds to the local chiropractors because they did not know what to do. In some casesDCs were temporarily granted prescription drug rights during the outbreak however they did not have any use for this because no drug is as powerful as the innate ability of the body to heal its self.

Following the pandemic many people who recovered from the flu as a result of chiropractic care decided to become chiropractors themselves. There was a huge increase in the amount of chiropractic students and chiropractic colleges across the country. Even during The Great Depression chiropractic practices thrived because people saw value in chiropractic care and respected their body’s ability to self heal and self regulate.

It is time that we realize the value in true health care and learn to respect the innate intelligence that exists in each and every one of us. In chiropractic, as in many natural healing disciplines, we understand that the power that made the body, heals the body. NO outside-in drug can ever come close to these inherent mechanisms. It is not the chiropractor healing the body it is the body doing all of the healing EVERYTIME!

A hundred years ago when direct to consumer advertising and the complete corruption of the pharmaceutical companies did not yet exist, people respected the innate intelligence that animated them. It is time that we regain this respect and understanding of self healing and trust that our body is smarter than any drug can ever be. Chiropractors do save lives, but it is through adjusting spinal subluxations, removing interference to the body and allowing the body to then heal its self. This is not magic or voodoo of any type. It is the body doing what it is meant to do… to live a healthy optimal life. Remember, health is more than just the absence of disease!

Practicing Balance

Ah Sunday afternoon… relaxing, sipping tea, listening to peaceful music and writing. In the evening I often meditate, work out and cook dinner with friends. All in an effort to set the tone for the upcoming week. Sunday is my time to check-in with myself. Did I achieve balance? Did I get everything done that I needed to ? Where am I struggling? The answer to the first question regarding balance is always no, yet each week I start over and practice finding that balance.

When I was in the  lower quarters at Palmer, taking over 30 credits per quarter, I always thought that finally in upper quarters I would get to relax. I was so wrong! My final quarter at Palmer is proving to be the busiest. Working at my preceptorship several days a week, seeing patients in the clinic, working on everything that must be done to start a practice, figuring out how and when to move, making the quotas for my editor position at All Things Healing and then making sure I meet all the responsibilities for the clubs and organizations I am a member of. That is all part of my professional life and balancing that alone is a chore, but super fun and rewarding! My personal life takes a huge hit, due to my professional ambitions, but that is a sacrifice I am willing to make right now. What I am striving for is to have enough balance between my professional and personal lives that I am truly happy.

Here is what I expect from myself each day:
Meditation
Exercise
Writing- affirmations, goals, blog posts, articles or what I am grateful for.
Writing at least one thank you card or email .
Green smoothie.
SLEEP!

This is what is important to me! I know if I can do these things each day then I can practice more balance in my life. Graduating from chiropractic school is going to be one of the biggest days of my life. It is something I have been preparing to do for many years. As I talked about in previous blogs “positive transition” times of change are super difficult. This is truly the most exciting time of my life. I am so excited to bring my message of vitalism and chiropractic to the Santa Barbara area!

Healthy Children Have Strong Immune Systems

By: Elizabeth M. Wisniewski  BA, CMT, Chiropractic Intern, Chiropractic Section Co-editor at All Things Healing

What do you think of when you hear the words, “immune system,”? Do images of germs, in the form of nerds (candy) shaped little gremlins that are going to make you sick fill your mind? Do you automatically want to reach for your hand sanitizer to kill these germs in order to promote health? A healthy immune system is imperative to overall well being. Are you comfortable that you are doing everything you can to enhance your child’s immune system?

When a child is born naturally they get their first immune system boost as they pass through the vaginal canal. They are exposed to bacteria that can then act as a barrier against more harmful colonies in the future. 1 Babies born by Caesarian section have been shown to be at higher risk for food allergies and even asthma in later years because they do not get this helpful boost during this type of delivery. 1New studies suggest that babies born via a C-section will benefit from probiotics and that naturally born babies see no benefit. If your baby was born as a result of a C-section it is imperative to supplement them with probiotics as soon as possible to enhance their immune system.

The next step to a healthy baby is breast feeding them. The mother is always circulating anti-bodies and when it is time for her to breast feed her newborn the body signals for some of these antibodies to go to the mammary glands. When the baby nurses they ingest these antibodies and they travel directly to the baby’s gut. This is where they live as the baby develops their own immune system. IGA is the most prominent antibody and is able to survive the harsh acids of the stomach and provide passive immunity for the baby. 2 Most experts recommend breast feeding for at least the first six months of life however the benefits of breast feeding the infant occur for as long as the breast feeding takes place. These helpful benefits for the mother and baby continue for years, allowing the baby to develop into a healthier child and adult.

As the infant begins to eat solid foods and develop into a toddler the type of food they eat will affect their immune system. Probiotics will benefit babies born via C-section and are recommended for older children and adults. It has also been shown that mothers taking probiotics during their pregnancy and then breast feeding their child can pass along probiotics through their milk and the baby has a decreased risk of allergies later in life. This is thought to be due to the “hygiene hypothesis”.3Bottle fed babies given probiotics directly see a similar benefit however they are not receiving the same passive immunity from the mother if they are fed formula. 2

Along with high quality probiotic supplements naturally fermented foods have been used in every culture for thousands of years. Fermented foods are a rich natural source of probiotics and not only boost the immune system by lining the gut with good bacteria they are also linked to better brain function. The Central Nervous System is made up of the brain and spinal cord and the Enteric nervous system is found in the gut. These two systems communicate through the Vagus nerve, which is the tenth (of twelve) cranial nerves and travels from the brain to the abdomen. There is an increasing body of research showing the link between gut flora and mood, anxiety, depression and overall brain function. 4 The take away lesson is that the food you eat impacts your mood and brain function. Also eating foods rich in natural fiber like raw fruits and vegetables provides inulin (fiber) which the good bacteria feed on. Bad bacteria eat sugars so eating a diet high in raw, organic fruits and vegetables helps the good bacteria thrived. Dr. Joseph Mercola recommends the ratio of 80:20, the 80 being good bacteria and the remaining amount the so called “bad” bacteria. This ratio insures a healthy immune system for years to come.

Another important step to enhancing your child’s immune system is having them adjusted regularly. Recent studies show that an adjustment with cavitations (that “popping
“ sound) show a marked increase in two important antibodies, IGG and IGM. This suggests a “priming” affect  meaning that the body will have a faster immune response in the future to infection. Even after two hours following the adjustment research subjects still had an increased amount of IGG in their blood stream. 5 This demonstrates what chiropractors have seen for 117 years and has been reported in many case studies. 6Children and adults who receive regular chiropractic care have a healthier immune system. This is because the immune system is regulated by the nervous system and specific chiropractic adjustments directly impact the nervous system’s function. Adjustments to the spine , where there are subluxations (often referred to as misalignments) cause interference to the nervous system. When a specific adjustment is applied to the spinal subluxation the interference is removed and the nervous system is able to function at its optimal level. When the nervous system is functioning properly and optimally it can then regulate the immune system to launch quick responses when it is under attack from foreign invaders like infections. Therefore along with proper diet, including probiotics, and regular chiropractic care the child will have an enhanced immune system and remain healthy throughout their development into adulthood. Chiropractic adjustments from birth help to create and enhance the immune system and provide the reassurance that you , as a parent, are indeed doing everything you can to enhance your child’s immune system function.

Adjust Your Thinking When It Comes To Ear Infections

Adjust Your Thinking About Ear Infections
by: Elizabeth M. Wisniewski BA, CMT, Chiropractic Intern, ATH co-editor of Chiropractic

One of the most common reasons for parents to take their children to the pediatrician is for chronic ear infections. This accounts for approximately 35% of all childhood visits to the medical doctor. 1  Although often related to a virus, anti-biotics are prescribed only to cause further damage to the child’s delicate immune system. This occurs when anti-biotics are over prescribed, killing important gut flora which makes up approximately 80% of the body’s immune system. If this is the only course of action during these chronic ear infections your child’s immune system will only continue to weaken and disease will manifest. Dangerous anti-biotic resistant bacteria can develop in the child’s body and eventually spread to others, during future colds. 2

Chiropractic offers a safe, non-drug and non-surgical approach to health care. In the case of ear infections there is often fluid that builds up in the middle ear. This fluid temporarily causes “muffled” hearing. The fluid drains more effectively therefore decreasing the chances for future ear infections with cervical (neck) adjustments. 3Prominant pediatric chiropractor, Dr. Peter Fysh explains that fluid is unable to drain in children due to their horizontally positioned Eustachian tubes. In children these tubes are a shorter distance, connecting the middle ear to the back of the throat and nose. The shorter distance coupled with the position of the tubes make it easier for bacteria and viruses to migrate during a “cold”. When there are misalignments, or subluxations, in the child’s upper cervical spine the fluid is unable to drain properly thus creating a breeding ground for future infections. This is why frequent adjustments during an acute infection and follow up maintenance care can assist the body in draining the fluid and with the spine properly aligned prevent future infection. 4 This conservative care is also useful in preventing the use of tubes that often fail causing increased amounts of scar tissue in the ear drum leading to hearing loss. It is estimated that 20 to 30% of tubes are pushed out of the ear drum within several months of the surgery and this rejection rate leads to multiple surgeries which is dangerous enough on its own. 4

Recent studies show that children who receive a course of anti-biotics and those who do not have any anti-biotics both recover in approximately one to seven days. 2,3 Dr. Joseph Mercola suggests using garlic paste dissolved into olive oil or breast milk administered through a dropper into the ear every several hours to reduce the inflammation which is causing pain. 2 These natural approaches along with chiropractic care will instantly decrease your child’s pain without the long term side effects of anti-biotics. Natural prevention through breast feeding, which provides the child with IGA (important to fight foreign invaders) along with chiropractic care is not only much safer than any of the other options spelled out above it is also extremely cost effective. 5 Furthermore, it allows the child to naturally build up its own immune system which is critical for a healthy child’s development and for the rest of their life!

Regular chiropractic care for you and your entire family is extremely valuable for long term health. Maintenance adjustments can prevent illness through enhancing and strengthen the immune system. Research shows that the nervous system is hardwired into immune system organs therefore it is the nervous system that controls the immune system. 6 Knowing this, it only makes sense to have a properly functioning nervous system free from spinal subluxations. Subluxations in the spine cause interference to the nervous system and the body is unable to fight off infections naturally. To summarize, a subluxation in the upper cervical spine can cause interference of the nervous system which controls the immune system. Structurally these subluxations may even be impacting the muscles and other soft tissues structures around the ear which usually help the ear drain when the body is subluxation free. Specific upper cervical adjustments will allow the body to drain the fluid in the middle ear and strengthen the immune system therefore preventing future infections. Have your spine as well as your child’s spine checked regularly for subluxations and go to the chiropractor if your child presents with the symptoms of an ear infection. A well adjusted child is not only happier but much healthier overall!
