Your Dietary Guidelines In 3 Words...EAT REAL FOOD

TheFDA announced new food labels this past week, since they have not been updated since the early 1990s. On the surface this is a good idea but they are completely missing the mark on calories!
Yes, obviously you want to burn more calories than you take in, this makes sense. However, what does not make sense is a constant obsession with calories in our foods. Some people who have serious problems surrounding food may need to use this as a tool at first but the majority of people should look at other factors rather than focusing on calorie intake.
What should people be looking for? Things like pronounceable ingredients, as few ingredients as possible, and the best case scenario is that there are NO ingredients because you are eating a whole food! There is not a label on a carrot you purchase form an organic farmer at the farmers market, it is just a carrot…. So eat it! My biggest piece of nutritional advice as a doctor is to Eat REAL FOOD! I do not believe there is one diet or nutritional plan that is perfect for every person except for eating real food. This means buying local, buying organic, and making meals. It may take a bit longer right now but it will save you time and money later when you are not wasting it in the doctor’s office or hospital.
One of the good things I am seeing about these new labels is that they are finally acknowledging the harmful impact of synthetic sugars on the body. They cause serious inflammation and do tremendous damage to the nervous system, and since the nervous system controls everything, they damage the entire body. Please refer to my previous post on sugars here.

The FDA still has miles to go in regard to food! If you are eating real food you will be healthier. Proper nutrition combined with reguar exercise and regular chiropractic care will allow you to live a full and active life.
