Birth May Have Caused Your First Spinal Subluxation

If you have been  a patient in our office, then you have obviously filled out our intake form and been asked questions about your own birth. (Visit www.genuinechiro and click the forms tab to see this) Often people ask questions about this part of the form. Women will often ask if it means giving birth to their own children and men frequently leave it blank thinking it does not apply to them.
We explain why we ask this important question and patient either do not know and talk to their own mother which is beautiful that it sparks an important conversation. The either scenario is that people will say, “oh yes my mom said it was a really traumatic birth it took x hours”
The reason we ask is because many times birth is the most traumatic thing that happens to someone in their lifetime. A “normal” hospital birth they will use anywhere from 80 – 140 pounds of pressure to pull the baby out. This pressure and stress is exerted on the baby’s head, neck, spine, and nervous system. Besides the obvious force there is often times extreme twisting of the head and neck which can also cause damage. Part of this has to do with the nervous system not being fully developed until nine months of age so extreme pulling and twisting sometimes damages nerves. This same process can also be so traumatic as to cause the child’s first subluxation of the spine. If the baby is not checked by a chiropractor then they can go a lifetime with these subluxations and never be able to reach their full potential.
As I previously mentioned, the amount of force is upwards of 140 pounds of pressure. The higher end is associated with interventions such as forceps and vacuum extraction. A cesarean birth is so traumatic that the mother is often lifted off the operating table as the baby is removed. That is a lot of pressure!
What is the good news? Chiropractic care is safe, gentle, and critical starting from birth. Even better, is the mother gets checked and adjusted during her pregnancy. There are techniques that work very well for pregnant women and that both Dr. Jacob and I are certified in – this is called the Webster technique.
How do we adjust a baby? The baby can be held by us, the parent, in a special pillow on our adjusting table, or the baby can be on the mom tummy while she is on the table on her back. The adjustments are very gentle and are the same pressure used to test a ripe tomatoes. Children respond very well to adjustments and it truly gives their nervous system a chance to thrive so that they can reach their full potential throughout their lifespan.
At Genuine Chiropractic we love taking care of children from the time they are born. We have many great articles on pediatric care available on our website www.genuinechiro.com for you to read.
